Almost immediately after the discovery of kimberlites, the attention of investigators was attracted to their unusual mineralogy. It has been established that, besides the fragments caught up from various crustal rocks, xenoliths of unusual types occur in the kimberlites, believed by most investigators to have been brought up from great depths. The interest in these xenoliths increased even further following the first discovery of a diamond?]bearing eclogite in 1897, the study of which led to the hypothesis of an eclogite layer in the Earth.
An early survey of the mineralogy and petrography of the deep?]seated xenoliths has been brought together in the authoritative monograph of Williams (1932).
