This volume presents new developments in the theory
of degenerations. The unifying theme is the applica-
tion of techniques from the birational geometry of
threefolds. Among the applications of this study are
partial compactifications of moduli spaces of algebraic
varieties and insight into the geometry of smooth
varieties.
