Perhaps the greatest visual difference between the war¬ships of 1940 and those of 1945 was the growth of a forest of electronics, most notably radar - and the forest has continued to grow ever since. Although the basis of radar is well known, the very rich variety of antennas and systems in service is due to a series of complications less widely understood. Yet an appreciation of these complexities provides a valuable link between the many designs visible on warships and the very considerable technical ingenuity underlying them.
