One of the major arenas of debate in Aegean prehistory for the last 25 years has been state-formation and the emergence of civilization. Inevitably, the process of urbanization has been one of the topics around which there has been much discussion. In contrast the nature and character of Bronze Age towns has been largely ignored, particularly at a generalized level. Papers on prehistoric Aegean towns have usually focussed on their architecture and particularly their elite or public architecture and are often restricted to a single town or even a single building. This volume seeks to redress the balance and direct attention and thought not only to urban settlements as a whole but to their social and economic roles, their demographic significance and ultimately to their character and personality.
