Ancient Kellis lies some 400 miles to the south-west of Cairo in the Western desert of Egypt. This first volume of Kellis papyri contains 90 texts from Area A of the site at Ismet el-Kharab, found over several seasons of excavation since 1986 by the Dakhleh Oasis Project. Over that period several thousands of papyrus fragments, ostraka and wooden boards inscribed with Greek or Coptic, and occasionally Syriac and Latin texts, were discovered; this volume contains the most coherent of those Greek texts, with photographic reproductions of each papyrii. Together they offer a broad range of glimpses in to the daily life of people living in Kellis in the fourth century AD, and are especially interesting as until quite recently hardly any documents from or about the Dakhleh Oasis had been published. Also included are a number of indices referring to the mention in the texts of emperors and consuls, personal and geographical names, professions and trades, religion and magic, and other significant words or terms.
