Davidsen's semiotic reading is focused on a very specific narrative dimension of the gospel: the actantial dimension. Other literary and narrative studies focus on various aspects of either the "story" or the "discourse" (Chatman's vocabulary). Davidsen instead takes as particularly significant what helps or hinders the plot progression, actions in and of themselves, thematic roles, what helps or hinders a character to act.
