Ebook: The Epicurean tradition
Author: Howard Jones
The Epicurean Tradition documents the long and complex history of Epicureanism from the the classical to the post-classical age. Established in fourth century Greece in response to the particular needs of a new age, it gained an immediate and widespread following throughout the Mediterranean world, and in Roman times competed on equal terms with Stoicism for the allegiance of the citizens of the empire. It was furthermore singled out by the early church as a dangerous enemy of the faith. Coinciding with renewed interest in the antique world, Epicureanism, truer to its classical parent, re-emerged in the Renaissance to add an important dimension to the philosphical debate of the time.
