From the preface: "In this book I have attempted to examine the thought of Greek poets and philosophers on the ethical and paideutic aspects of music. With one exception, my examination has been limited to writers of the Hellenic period. Concerning later developments beyond Philodemus I have not thought myself qualified to comment, though their importance for the shaping of Western musical thought might well merit separate treatment by a specialist. While I have drawn upon the work of musicologists, I cannot pretend that the present study makes any contribution to their field. It has been described as a chapter in the history of ideas: readers may be aided by bearing in mind this description and the limitations I have mentioned."
