ISO 646 comprises a series of ISO standards known as "Information technology — ISO 7-bit coded character set for information interchange." These standards have been developed in collaboration with ASCII since at least 1964. Since its initial release in 1967, ISO 646 has defined a 7-bit character code from which several national standards have been derived.
