Hijab and identity: how do Muslim women speak for themselves in national debates and what repercussions are they confronted with? Anna C. Korteweg and Gökce Yurdakul analyze processes of inclusion and exclusion by way of »national narratives« and public discourses of belonging to geographical communities in France, Turkey, the Netherlands and Germany. In doing so, their focus is on media and political discussions around the hijab, niqab and the burka, which oscillate between rejection, tolerance and negotiation. The statements of Muslim women show how, using the example of the debates around the hijab, the meaning of national belonging can be reconsidered, reinforced and potentially also rearticulated.
