The history of African-American soldiers stationed in Germany has hitherto received little attention. In this book, Maria Höhn and Martin Klimke trace how, across the course of the 20th century, the country developed into an important reference point in the African-American struggle for equal rights and the end of segregation in the USA. Spanning both of the world wars and the period of occupation until the late 1970s, the pair portray the protests that took place in the US military bases and garrison stations in West Germany, Dr. Martin Luther King's visit to Berlin in 1964, the alliance between the student movement, Black Power and GI movements, as well as Angela Davis's solidarity campaign in both East and West Germany.
