The early modern era was one of dramatic upheavals in Europe, with cities playing a key role as sites for such change. The contributions to this volume rise to the challenge of researching and conveying the history of these early modern cities in a contemporary way. In the example of Frankfurt am Main and other former free German cities, the methodological impulses of the various cultural turns are analysed and combined with empirical studies, with four levels of investigation brought to the fore: urban space, the perception of the city, the cultural history of economics, and the cultural history of politics.
