New regionalism and globalisation have been prominent themes in academic and political debates throughout the 1990s. Despite the considerable amount of scholarly attention that the new regionalism has received in recent years its full potential remains yet to be investigated. Indeed, there remains a significant gap in our understanding of the new regionalism, both as an empirical phenomenon and as a developing theoretical framework for comparative regionalism.This study offers: new avenues in theorising regionalisation; a consolidated framework for analysis and comparison; and a historical perspective and the explicit application.
