Refugees are oftentimes considered to be victims without any rights and excluded even from democratic communities, though their legal status has fundamentally changed since the end of World War Two. Usually drawing upon Hannah Arendt and Giorgio Agamben, they are located outside of political spaces and therefore at the margin of the world. Yet Julia Schulze Wessel shows: By being marginal characters, refugees question, violate and transcend borders, thus challenging democratic orders in their own specific way. Marching through the border area of Europe, they also point out the limitations of law and move into the center of current political debates.
