While anthropology initially shied away from it, multiculturalism has been widely debated within the fields of political theory, social policy, cultural studies and law. "Beyond Multiculturalism" is the first volume of its kind to offer a comparative view of multiculturalism in a variety of countries worldwide and considers both traditionally multicultural/multiethnic societies and those where cultural pluralism is relatively new. The case studies address multiculturalism in urban everyday life, focusing on the intersections and relationships between cultural groups. Using employment, identity, consumption, language, legislation and policymaking, the contributors show the unique contribution that anthropologists can bring to studies of multiculturalism. Their work will be of great interest to scholars of race, ethnicity, migration, urban studies and social and cultural geography.
