Ebook: Heavy Tanks of the USSR in the World War II: Unique modern and old world war technology
Author: William S. Carson
- Language: English
- epub
This publication is devoted to the main models of Soviet heavy tanks, which took part in the battles of the Second World War.
For a number of reasons, heavy tanks were not very popular in the Soviet Union. Despite the good fighting qualities of the tanks of the "KV" and "IS" series, the most famous domestic armored vehicle is the medium T-34. You can talk a lot about the prerequisites for this scenario, but the fact remains. Moreover, some heavy tanks of the Soviet design not only could not become the most famous representatives of their class, but even get at least some glory. In this book we will consider some of the most significant models of heavy tanks of the USSR.
Also worth noting that at the beginning of the war a clash with Soviet heavy tanks was a real shock for the Wehrmacht. German intelligence reported nothing to its leadership about the availability of such equipment from the Soviet Union; the heavy tanks that the Finns saw during the Winter War and even some could take prisoners, for some reason were considered experimental, not serial copies. As a result, the German army did not have regular means of fighting this technique and each time they had to improvise, until it was experimentally established that such tanks can only be knocked down after multiple hits from antiaircraft 88mm guns or with the help of a bomber.
All Soviet heavy tanks are distinguished by rational reservation, powerful armament and good mobility. However, the rate of fire of the guns is not high, the accuracy and strength of the tanks themselves are small. All this forces us to act on medium, or better - at close ranges of combat.
