It is essential to know integralism in order to understand the present-day resurgent of far-right politics in Brazil most associated with support for the demagogue Bolsanaro. Brazil actually had a fascist and anti-communist movement in its history at the same time as Mussolini and Hitler. Founded by deputy and journalist Plínio Salgado, the Brazilian Integralist Action was the largest fascist movement outside Europe between the 1920s and 1940s - and also the largest far-right movement in the country until the emergence of Jair Bolsonaro. It was a nationalist, authoritarian and traditionalist organization. It even had a million adherents who were known as the “plucked” or “green shirts” for dressing in green - as il duce's disciples in Italy were dressed in black and the legion of führer followers in Germany was dressed in khaki. . Inspired by European leaders, Plínio was an anti-communist and defended the ideas of fascism, including the defense of a national identity and the belief that the salvation of the country required both obedience to a “savior of the country” and the destruction of internal enemies. As instruments, he preached violence and militarism while having family and religion as fundamental values. Despite having lasted a few years, Ação Integralista Brasileira had exponents such as jurist Miguel Reale, anthropologist Câmara Cascudo, archbishop Dom Hélder Câmara, writer José Lins do Rego and, witnesses say, even musician and poet Vinícius de Moraes. In BRAZILIAN FASCISM, Pedro Doria tells this little-studied moment in Brazilian history with a wealth of details that will allow the reader not only to know integralism but to make connections between past and present themselves.
