How to Compost (At Home)
Many gardeners and farmers who have used compost have sung the praises of this nutritious soil amendment. Many people are interested in trying their hand, but aren't sure what to do
Here's the lowdown on how to compost and what is involved in the process, whether you choose to make your own, or just want to understand it.
Compost is basically living material that has broken down. By controlling different factors, you can make compost in the most efficient way possible. You speed up what happens in nature in a slow, random way.
Plant and animal matter is broken down by bacteria in the air and soil, ending up as nutrient-rich dirt, basically. By controlling the amounts of moisture, heat, aeration, and ratio of material, you control how quickly things decompose.
Start with the ingredients that go into a compost pile. Almost all animal and plant matter can be added, with the exception of dog, cat and human manure, which can contain toxins and diseases that can be harmful.
Bacteria and other microbes which do the work of decomposition are found in soil and finished compost. So some of that should always be added, kind of like a jump start.
Air needs to be provided, either actively or passively. Without air, the compost will turn slimy, rather than breaking down into crumbles.
