Named for South America's famed independence fighter Simón Bolívar, landlocked Bolivia rests in the center of the continent. With its snowy mountain peaks, tropical rain forests, and grasslands, the nation holds vast mineral resources and great natural beauty. The Andes Mountain range dominates the western third of Bolivia, where most of its 10 million people live. More than 60 percent of Bolivia's citizens are Native Americans, who historically have been dominated by the white and mestizo minority. However, with the 2006 election of the country's first indigenous president, Evo Morales, and the passage of a new constitution in 2009, Native Americans have gained greater rights and freedoms. Despite this, Bolivia continues to face many challenges, and remains one of the least-developed and poorest countries in Latin America. There's a lot to discover about Bolivia!
