Using case examples extending from the 2^nd century to the present, the study typologically classifies religious structures of succession and examines the dissemination of knowledge associated with them. The geographical scope ranges from the Mediterranean region to Japan. A focus is placed on religions with a chain of incumbency that can be traced back to mythical, literary fictional, or historical founders.
