Georg Forster was a travel writer who accompanied James Cook’s second journey around the world. He was also a revolutionary democrat and the Mainz Republic’s representative to the French Convention, but Forster has been largely forgotten in reception history. His writings help challenge our understanding of Germany’s role, before it was constituted as a national state, in Europe and in Europe’s expansion into the non-European world.
