Very soon after the 'Anschluss' with Austria in 1938, the Nazi régime used the criminal judiciary to fight and suppress its political opponents. High treason, treason and also, in wartime, 'corrupting the armed forces' were the central crimes of which the political opposition were accused. Everything which was considered an attack on the 'inner front' was persued legally. In a unique manner, the extent and nature of National Socialist criminal proceedings in Austria are documented by the indictments and judgements of the Volksgerichtshof ('People's Court'), the central political court in the Reich, and above all by the files of the higher regional court in Vienna and, after October 1944, the higher regional court in Graz.
The articles of this work present the indictments and judgements of the respective trials of Austrian regime critics, from the years 1938 to 1945, and examine them from different points of view. The documents, upon which the study Resistance, Persecution and Justice in the 'Third Reich' was based, were filmed completely for the microfiche edition Widerstand and Verfolgung in Österreich 1938–1945.
