In its development, Franco-Canadian literature has defined itself very centrally in terms of resistance to English-speaking supremacy on the American continent. Accordingly, it tends to display strongly nationalist features. The model it originally proceeded on was in most cases an idealized image of pre-revolutionary France which had very little in common with the realities of a modern European nation. After the economic crisis in 1929, there was an upsurge of 'compact' ideologies in global discourse putting strong argumentative pressure on Franco-Canadian identity and producing specific forms within the literary system such as the rural novel (roman de la terre).
