The "West" is a critical concept in the political vocabulary of the 20^th century. During the long turn of the century, the "West" was reshaped in a remarkable way: it denoted the colonialist civilizing mission and served as a counterweight to the "East," which was associated with Russian autocracy. The great powers situated themselves as superior "civilizations" through reference to the "West", thus exposing the ambiguities of the modern age.
