The main work of the Old Testament and Palestine scholar Gustaf Dalman (1855‑1941), Arbeit und Sitte in Palästina, known far beyond the area of theology, was first published from 1928 on in different publishing houses and since then has had several new editions. The work provides a view of the pre-industrial, traditional daily life of Palestine’s Arab inhabitants at the turn of the twentieth century. The eighth and last volume could not be finished by Dalman. It is now available for the first time in an edition by the Gustaf Dalman Institute in Greifswald. In addition to the text written by Dalman on birth, child education, everyday life, and death in Palestine after the turn of the century, the volume contains for the first time a complete index of the literature cited in all the volumes, as well as a complete index to volumes I‑VIII, consisting of a subject index, an index of biblical passages and ‑ new ‑ an index of the rabbinic citations. One extensive picture section contains photos which for the most part were taken by Dalman himself. The photos illustrate the present volume, VIII, in the areas treated.
