Legend has it that Clarence Darrow said that if there were life after death, he would return on the anniversary of his death to a place where he so often found peace and solace - now called the Clarence Darrow Memorial Bridge. It spans Jackson Park Lagoon on the south side of Chicago, a short distance from where he lived. Mr. Darrow called it "the prettiest view on Earth". Each year on March 13th, the anniversary of his death, a small group of people braces against the raw winds of March, usually standing in a soft mantle of snow, to gather at the bridge and await Mr. Darrow's return. While they wait, they listen to progressive and inspirational oratory commemorating his life. If Mr. Darrow returned, wouldn't he be surprised? Wouldn't he be surprised to find more than 2000 persons on death row facing execution in 38 states?
