Taking the handicrafts of the nineteenth century for inspiration, this book looks at a wide range of beautiful household items which can be created in knitting and crochet. 'Victorian white knitting' enjoyed immense popularity for a range of traditional articles, and here Shelagh Hollingworth has brought many of the patterns up to date. Reference is made to the equipment and materials that might have been used for the original items, and suitable modern versions are recommended. A section on the basic techniques of knitting and crochet is followed by the patterns, including instructions for bedspreads, table linen, tray cloths, cushion covers, chair backs, cot covers, and even lace curtains. Many of the articles featured are composed of small sections which are made separately and joined together at the end of the work. All the stitches are based on knit and purl, double crochet and treble crochet. Thus, although the end result looks intricate and impressive, even newcomers to knitting and crochet will find that the patterns are within their scope, while for more adventurous workers the projects will lend themselves to adaptation and experimentation.
