This is a textbook on the analysis of novels, short stories and other forms of fictional narrative. The book introduces and discusses key terms in modern narrative analysis such as narrator, focalizer, voice and narrative levels, as well as more timeless concepts such as theme, myth and genre.
In connection with the presentation of several of the concepts, example analyses are carried out. These include works by authors as diverse as Voltaire, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Jack Kerouac and Stig Dagerman. Some sections broaden the perspective and demonstrate different ways of relating the studied text to different types of contexts, intertexts and other media. Other sections focus on aspects of the construction of the text.
The book ends with two chapters on Hjalmar Soderberg's The Coat and Selma Lagerlof's One Always Gets Revenge.
The book is primarily intended for basic education in literary studies at universities and colleges, but may also be useful for other groups interested in literature and media.
