This is a textbook that presents the basics of poetry analysis and interpretation. The main terms and theories are explained and applied to a wide range of texts from ancient love poems to contemporary rock poetry.

The book is organized around the idea that poetry reaches us primarily through two senses: sight and hearing. Some poems need to be seen to be fully understood, others need to be heard to convey their qualities, and still others reach us equally well through both eyes and ears.
