The book aims to train statistical thinking so that you can understand and use some simple statistical methods. It is structured around a large number of examples and new concepts are introduced and justified by means of introductory examples.
The book covers simple probability reasoning, some commonly used distributions such as the binomial, Poisson, normal and exponential distributions, and various measures of location and dispersion. It also covers point estimates, confidence intervals (including comparative situations), tests and distribution papers. For both confidence intervals and tests it is discussed how to proceed if you do not have a normal distribution situation.
The book is primarily aimed at students in civil and university engineering programs, but it is also suitable for other higher education programs or for self-study. Each chapter contains a large number of exercises with answers. There is also a separate chapter with mixed exercises of varying difficulty.
