The purpose of this study is thus twofold. It is intended firstly to present short reports of the more significant results of excavations between 1971 and 1977 which concern Anglo-Saxon and Norman Colchester, and secondly to publish, in most cases for the first time, material which is essential if the recent discoveries are to be seen in their proper perspective. The appendices contain notes on subjects which have only an indirect bearing in the topics under discussion but are nevertheless still relevant.
