This volume explores some of the key themes and topics of interest found in contemporary constructive theology – it opens by narrating “constructive theology” historically, traces the emergence of the conversation in the USA and maps other, theological, historical, and disciplinary trends.
Contributors examine the use of bible and history in constructive theologies, as well as the porous boundaries between Christianity and other religions, commonalities between constructive and comparative modes of doing theology, reflections on contextual, liberation and constructive theologies from Africa and from Black British perspectives, the connection between embodiment, epistemology and hermeneutics; as well as critically constructive work with the dangerous memories and theologies of colonial histories in Belgium and Native Americans in the United States.
The volume provides theologians interested in constructive methods with an introductory historical account and to discuss various hermeneutical and methodological concerns to clarify their own projects, and to consider various interdisciplinary aspects and possibilities of constructive theological work. At the same time, it provides a sampler of current work in theological construction and seeks to help set the stage for other volumes in this series dedicated to rethinking theologies and gathering constructive alternatives.
