Tamerlane was born in Asia during the disintegration of the Mongol empire, not far from Samarkand, into a family of the small local nomadic aristocracy. He brought together different tribes and peoples in a mighty army that crossed Asia subduing all the powers that he found in his path. For more than forty years he was constantly at war and his military genius transformed him into a titanic figure, an object of hatred, fear and veneration in both East and West. This volume, as well as retracing his extraordinary deeds, intends to illustrate his political project, closely observing not only the warrior and his legend but also the man, with his obsessive attachment to the family and his obsession for succession. An unprecedented picture of the late medieval East will emerge, with sensational insights into the geographical conception of the time and the many unknown lands that the Great Emir invaded. We shall know his adversaries and members of his restless family; and many of the expedients that they adopted to survive in a time of extreme harshness. With Tamerlano we will enter a remote, refined, ferocious and complex world, in which the Iranian myth, the Turkish-Mongol tradition, the Islamization of the Central Asian populations are reflected and merged. A world so vast that it laps and touches very distant civilizations and lands such as India or Georgia but also the Russian world, the Lithuanian and Polish world dominated by the Golden Horde, and China, or, last but not least, the Italian agencies , France, up to the city of Constantinople. The book closes with the fame acquired by Tamerlane in Asia and Europe, which can be found in Renaissance political and historical treatises and in theatrical and musical works of the Baroque age. A refraction that goes from the ideas of Machiavelli and Voltaire to the modern studies inaugurated by the great Vassilij Bartol'd and last but not least, to the creation of the myth of Tamerlane as the founder of modern Uzbekistan.
