Aleister Crowley was the first modern occultist to demonstrate the existence of superior alien intelligences, with whom he and others established contact or 'rapport', but his findings were not taken seriously until after his death in 1947, when the massive interest in psychic phenomena and psionic science confirmed many of his claims that consciousness can and does exist independently of the physical brain.

Kenneth Grant, a leading authority on Crowley and his successor as Head of the Ordo Templi Orientis, has continued and developed Crowley's pioneering studies and has succeeded in unravelling a network more complex than was ever imagined: a network not unlike H. P. Lovecraft's dark vision of sinister forces lurking at the rim of the universe.

Outside the Circles of Time explores the roots and branches of these ideas, from Blavatsky, Crowley's Book of the Law, Lovecraft's Necronomicon to the work of Andahadna, contemporary priestess of Maat, the goddess of the Dark Aeon that, even now, spins closer to our time and space.

KENNETH GRANT studied magick under Aleister Crowley and it was not until a few years after Crowley's death that he took over the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.), a body of Initiates working towards the establishment of the Law of Thelema and the true magical tradition that Crowley and others helped to revive. The author has, in collaboration with John Symonds, edited and annotated all of Crowley's major works and is himself the author of a number of studies in the occult.
