Starting from a philosophical riddle of personal autonomy, and challenging contemporary approaches, this book argues for the claim that AUTONOMY is a thick normative concept which stands for a particular kind of practical authority. On this basis, the book develops a conception of autonomy that solves the riddle and provides an adequate account of personal self-determination.
