In the period of more than a decade since the writing of the second
edition, the number of investigations in the field of heat transfer has
increased at a tremendous rate. A considerable part of this research
clearly reflects the military objectives for which it was performed. Some
of the data have only recently been removed from the requirements of
military secrecy and made available for general industria! application.
The development of nuclear reactors and jet engines required the solution
of novel heat-transfer problems which were beyond the range of
previous knowledge. Government agencies such as the Atomic Energy
Commission and the N ational Advisory Committee for Aeronautics have
been responsible for important advances and for the exploration of many
new fields.
