(Hillyer's humanity primer series is a milestone in the liberal arts education for primary and middle school students, and a representative work of the founder of in-home tutoring course system. Aside from science, history, geography and art are the cornerstones of a life's learning for children: History is temporally deep, geography is spatially vast, and art is the solace of the mind. Hillyer's narrative was based on research of the children's intelligence. He has a clear picture of what can or cannot be understood by children at a certain age. The book gives a linear view of historical events instead of introducing different countries. It was thus written to offer children a panoramic view of history, so that they would not look at the events as if they were isolated and independent. The narrative of historical events are measured and well balanced. Many materials were drawn from brilliant biographies and stories, adding "flesh and blood" to the "skeleton" of history and variety to the book. Virgil Mores Hillyer (1875-1931), born in Massachusetts, U.S., was a renowned American educator. A Harvard graduate, he devoted all his life to education of primary and middle school children. He was also the founder of the curricular system of in-home tutoring. He had a passion for history and art, and was fond of travelling. He seemed to be a natural at teaching: he understood the mentality of children, what they want and how to make them understand. Hillyer believed that reading, writing and mathematics are the foundation of learning which have to be laid solid. Meanwhile students should be systematically educated in history, geography and art, so as to be a well-rounded person informed of facts of the world. Agonized by the boredom and mediocrity of conventional textbooks, he made a wish to write a collection of interesting history, geography and art books. This was how these books came into being.)
