Aside from science, history, geography and art are the cornerstones of a life's learning for children: History is temporally deep, geography is spatially vast, and art is the solace of the mind. This book shows you around the world with the eyes of a traveller. It explains to children what is beyond the horizon, that there are more than Seven Wonders of the World, and much more. As a veteran traveller the author had been to many countries, whose course could circle the earth five times. Hence the idea of writing a book on geography. For children, learning geography is a way of exploring the earth. Hillyer suggested that children can cut and paste pictures of places around the world to complie a geography magazine of their own. Virgil Mores Hillyer (1875-1931), born in Massachusetts, U.S., was a renowned American educator. A Harvard graduate, he devoted all his life to education of primary and middle school children. He was also the founder of the curricular system of in-home tutoring. He had a passion for history and art, and was fond of travelling. He seemed to be a natural at teaching: he understood the mentality of children, what they want and how to make them understand. Hillyer believed that reading, writing and mathematics are the foundation of learning which have to be laid solid. Meanwhile students should be systematically educated in history, geography and art, so as to be a well-rounded person informed of facts of the world. Agonized by the boredom and mediocrity of conventional textbooks, he made a wish to write a collection of interesting history, geography and art books. This was how these books came into being.)
