The study of waste disposal in the city is one of the most important issues facing any urban centre. Thus, from different but complementary perspectives, this issue brings together the proceedings of the conference entitled Sordes Urbis (Rome, 1996), which studied the process of waste disposal in the Roman city. Through the contributions of different specialists, it analyses the mechanisms used to deal with the disposal of solid urban waste which, despite the importance of recycling processes, was bulky and required adequate spaces, preferably outside the city, in which to be deposited. Similarly, the study of the elimination of wastewater through systems such as pits, sewers or the intelligent use of the slopes of the streets themselves is also addressed. The iconography of waste, the importance of river courses in waste disposal and the analysis of the situation both in Rome and in various provinces of the Empire are some of the topics that make this work an essential reference on the meaning of the Sordes and the treatment given to them by the Roman city.
