This volume is devoted to six key speeches in the history of South Africa, translated into Spanish. Most have never been translated, in any language, while, for instance, Spanish translations of Nelson Mandela’s 1990 liberation speech are dubious. Spanish-speaking readers will have access, for the first time or in a reliable form, to momentous speeches in the history of South Africa, which, for better or for worse, were decisive at the time, shaped the nation, and are now part of a national rhetorical history. In keeping with rhetorical criticism its further aim is to contribute significantly to an international body of studies on the "rhetoricity" of national identity formation, and what has been termed "constitutive rhetoric".
