Published to popular acclaim in 1809, this work, considered the first important contribution to American comic literature, was Washington Irvingï¿1/2s first book. The first volume relates the creation and population of the world, including the discovery of what would become New York. It then examines the first settlements of the Dutch and the ensuing reigns of Governors William the Testy and Wouter Van Twiller.
