This book summarizes rapid progress and innovation in transplantation and regenerative medicine - the merger of reconstructive plastic surgery and transplantation - called Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation. This merger includes face, hand, uteri, larynx, tongue, penis and trachea translplantations as well as other body part transplants using grafts derived from organ donors. These sorts of transplants are now performed more commonly. Cell therapies for immunomodulation are surrogates for immune responses after transplantation to non-invasive imaging of neuroregeneration for improving functional outcomes after transplant.

About the Author
Dr. Vijay Gorantla, MD, PhD, FRCS, is Professor of Surgery, Ophthalmology and Bioengineering and Director, Vascularized Composite Allotransplantation Program at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Gorantla’s widely published expertise involves reconstructive transplantation after civilian or combat trauma with specific focus on graft targeted strategies for immune modulation, extended preservation, or non-invasive surveillance of these complex transplants.

Dr. Fatih Zor, MD, is Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Winston Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Zor was recruited from the Gulhane Military Medical Academy in Turkey and holds a long-published track record with over 140 publications spanning clinical reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, and translational research in reconstructive transplantation.

Dr. Jelena M. Janjic, PhD, is Associate Professor of Pharmaceutics, at the Duquesne University School of Pharmacy, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Janjic pioneered pain nanomedicine with distinguished expertise in theranostics, nanoimaging and targeted nanodrug delivery in inflammation, nerve regeneration, organ preservation and transplantation. Her research has led to multiple imaging technology patents and highlighted in over 50 publications including special journal issues and book chapters.
