This book is exploring on the basis of archival manuscripts the formation of Russia’s state
border in south-western Siberia and in Irtysh-Yenisei intrfluve. The geographic mapping of yasak
townships and resettlement of tax-paying people in the middle basin of the Irtysh and Upper Ob
are discussed here in detail. The book presents complicated distribution of influences between
two neighboring states — Russia and Oyratia.
Large volume of new archival data is a valuable source for detailed reconstruction of Irtysh
campaigns 1714–1720, which considerably changed ethno-poitical situation in south-western Si­
beria. This edition is richly illustrated with reproductions of maps of late XVII — the first quarter of
XVIII, as well specially created historical maps. The chapters of the book are complemented by 94
rare documents, most of which are published for the first time.
