The present research work The Western Drama is a pioneer work in European drama and theatre. The subject matter of the book has been divided into two parts. Part One has chapters on theories of drama, theatre and world drama. Part Two has chapters on Absurd Theatre and the British Absurd Theatre.

What is unique about the book is a genuine survey of the western drama and a critical and comprehensive analysis of western theories of drama. As we know, the western drama was born in ancient Greece and Aristotle was the great theorist. Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were great practitioners of that drama. The Roman playwrights like Seneca contributed their might to this heritage. Then the European drama, with Shakespeare, Moliere, Shaw, Ibsen and many others supported the tradition of drama, at the same time strengthening it with new insights and experiments. Modern American drama has come of age now. The book analyses the same with references from some major American dramatists. Details about western theatre and insightful observations on world drama are other important features of the book.

It will prove useful to the students and teachers of English literature. The analysis of the plays of Beckett, Pinter and Stoppard will immensely help the researchers in this field.
