The 1964-1966 excavations at the Roman small town of Alcester, Warwickshire, were directed by Christine Mahany for the Ministry of Public Buildings and Works. The work was concentrated on the southern extramural area at Birch Abbey, where a housing estate was due to be constructed, and there were also two investigations of the town defences (sites K and M) and one excavation (site L) in the northern extramural area.

The results are reported in two parts. Part 1, this volume, describes the background to the excavations, and the stratigraphy and structures found on the sites. It also contains a discussion of the structures in their Roman context, and includes a review of work in the town up to December 1989. Part 2 contains details of the pottery and other finds, and a synthetic discussion of both the finds and the function of the site.
