In 1938, Thomas Wolfe undertook an extensive tour (by car) of the western United States (see map at end of book for the actual route) and kept a journal of his trip, which ended up in Seattle, where he became ill, which ultimately resulted in his death.

Here is that Journal.

A note on the editing:

Wolfe kept this journal in his ever-present ledgers (which he used for thoughts, ideas, and even scenes which could or would appear later in his published works).

The PDF scan from which this was taken reproduced each ledger page and numbered each one. There were paragraph breaks each time a page number appeared.  These have been removed to facilitate reading of the manuscript.

When reading the Editorial Notes at the end of the book, the page notations will reference the specific ledger page where the notation applies, which, as noted, has been removed.

Nonetheless, upon reading the manuscript, these notes should still make sense.

Also of note, Wolfe's notorious misspellings have been preserved just as they appeared in the manuscript.

Wolfe did not always complete the sentence or thought, so once in a while, the reader will see abrupt shifts that appear to be non-sequiturs.
