Policing opens with a section on the role and mandate of the police; moves to the context of policing in America, including studies of patrol, detective, and administrative policing; to strategies of policing, including the hitherto unpublished "Invitational Edges of Corruption: Some Consequences of Narcotic Law Enforcement," by Peter K. Manning and Lawrence J. Redlinger; to the practice of policing, including—the first appearance of John Van Maanen's "The Asshole"; to a final section on socializing for policing, with an Epilogue on the socialization of on researcher (John Van Maanen's "On Watching the Watchers"). An Appendix lists selected field studies of police—works publihed and in progress.
