My purpose here is to identify, in theoretical and practical areas, the forms which takes the
narrative metaphor on the social constructionist and constructivist psychotherapy. First I
briefly talk about the narrative concept and five possible reasons for their psychotherapeutic
adoption: the increasing interest for the meaning process, requirement for emotions working
models, the need for creating a background for the client's problems, and the narrative as a
possibility of more integration in the mental health field. Second, to analyze the particular
ways which takes the narrative metaphor in the constructionist and constructivist
psychotherapy, I present the more important epistemological (knowledge process, locus of
meaning, and self ) and methodological statements in each one of this orientations. Finally, I
mention the most important convergence and present a discussion about four divergences
that may have methodological relevance in the psychotherapeutic practice: speech versus
sequencing process, relationship versus individual, polivocally versus univocally, and moveon versus self-understanding.
