The first in a series of volumes that will provide detailed annotated guides to reference works that exist for particular regions of the world, Africa: Guide to Reference Material evaluates the major reference sources, other than bibliographies, which relate to Africa south of the Sahara.
It provides comprehensive coverage of a vast range of materials including:
• encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, handbooks
• gazetteers, almanacs, yearbooks, topographic reference sources
• biographical and statistical sources
Almost 1,800 titles, most of them personally examined by the compiler, are described and analysed for content, comprehension, and ease of use. Author and subject indexes are provided for greater accessibility, and the book also includes an Appendix Annual Reports on the British Possessions in Africa, which is a list of reports on the individual colonies and other possessions, issued in series from 1846 until the year of independence.
