South Africa has tried to gain international acceptance for apartheid by presenting it first as a policy of "separate development" and now in the guise of an association of "independent national states".

The South African Government has proclaimed a number of bantustans "independent" and may do so with more. It claims to be "developing" the bantustans.

Behind the public facade there has been growing poverty in the bantustans and a proliferation of emergency regulations to suppress resistance. There have been deportations of Africans to the bantustans and the wholesale removal of Africans already there whose official classification does not fit in with the grand design.

This new edition of a widely used book brings to light even more damning evidence of the reality of the bantustans than previous editions. It also examines the South African government's attempt to conceal that reality from the international community.
